ROAST | MEDIUM-LIGHT

ORIGIN: KAINALIU, KONA REGION OF THE BIG ISLAND

NOTES: WHITE PEACH, TAMARIND, APRICOT, APPLE PIE, & SANDALWOOD

The Maragogype varietal is one of the rarest Kona Coffee we have stumbled across. Although the beans are gargantuan in size, the Maragogype trees are infamous for their low-yield production and low density beans…. making them not very appealing to be grown by local coffee farmers.

We see huge potentials in these precious beans, especially if they are in the hands of an experienced roaster. Drinking this medium-light roasted coffee reminds of sweet white fruits such as white peach, lychee, and dragonfruits… it is honestly so enjoyable! This medium-light roast coffee really shines at the mid-range temperature so we encourage you to wait about 5 mins after brewing before you start sipping. We are excited to get our hands on this unique coffee and hope to be able to continue to showcase it year-round.

About Rich Wicklander, the Maragogype Varietal & Aloha Hills Farm

Owned an operated by Rich Wicklander, Aloha Hills Kona Coffee has been growing and processing coffee since 2005. What makes Aloha Hills special is that it is one of the few farms in Kona that comprised mostly of the Maragogype varietal. The truth however is that Rich didn’t know he had these unique coffee trees growing on his farm until he noticed the low crop production and giant cherries hanging from his trees. Upon calling a coffee plant expert, Rick discovered that he had almost 3 acres of Maragogype.

The Maragogype has the largest beans of any Coffea arabica cultivar. Its bean can stretch across the diameter of a penny after the roasting process. It is named after the city of Maragogype located in Brazil where it was first discovered and is believed be the result of a spontaneous mutation of the Typica varietal.

Aloha Hills has been recognized multiple times for its stellar coffee. Twice, its coffees have received first-place awards at the Kona Coffee Cupping Competition — one in 2011’s Kona Classic Division, the other in 2017’s Artisanal Division. Its coffees also have won first place in the 2014 and 2016 Hawaii Coffee Association’s statewide cupping competition, commercial division.
